Tall Stories
Here's Johnny Cobb again, this time with his son Craig. These magnificent Burnett Salmon (Threadies) are still the subject of many a party yarn. Back in '94 he was pumping Greg from Davo's on how and where to hook up on his first Jewfish. Armed with 'The Knowledge', now fully detailed in 'The Book', he and young Craig set off, with live Sandworms for bait, and anchored at 'Jew Hole' at the mouth of Lake Cooroibah. They came back with ten Jewies and a Tailor. Considering they only had nine worms it wasn't a bad effort. The following week the pair set out again, hoping for a repeat performance. What they got though was more than they bargained for. Baiting up a live worm John cast out and not long after was hit by the almost unstoppable 15kg specimen he's holding in the photo. When you're talking sportfish, on light tackle by comparison to offshore gear, a fish of this species and size in a limited area is a major adversary. John came through with flying colours though, and after 45 minutes had boated this beauty. Exhausted and elated, John lay back as Craig cast a live winter Whiting out in the hope of enticing a Mangrove Jack. What he got was the 13kg Salmon he's struggling to hold up. This fish took him completely by surprise and before he knew it his reel was spooled out and he was down to the knot. Seeing this his dad jumped in and hand lined 20 metres back into the boat. After getting some line back on the spool, and with much creative maneuvering around the anchor line and motor, Craig fought on for an hour before winning his own battle. John was using a Jarvis Walker 'Derwent' solid glass rod that he'd owned since he was 13 years old! He's still using it in 1997 which makes for 28 years of faithful service. The reel was a Shakespeare 050. Craig had a Noreaster rod and Butterworth Scorpion reel. Both were rigged with 5.5kg Platypus line which makes this a worthy 'Tall Story'. Note: Burnett Salmon nearly always travel in pairs so if you land one, don't be surprised if you hook a second.
