OFFSHORE: The weekend warriors got the best of it this week with moderate to fresh (15 to 20 knot) southerlies hammering the coastline until Thursday afternoon. From Friday onwards, though, it was all systems go with light to moderate (10 to 15 knot) variable easterlies and a rapidly decreasing 2m swell.
Snapper
Conditions were good enough on Friday for Noosa Blue Water Charters to schedule a full day excursion out wide to the Barwon Banks where they boated pearl perch, venus tusk fish, hussar, gold spot wrasse, moses perch and quality snapper. Jolene (above) is pictured with the day's standout 7kg knobby.
Yellowtail Kingfish
Back in, along the middle reef belt, snapper in the 2kg-3kg range were in excellent numbers at Chardon's Reef and to a slightly lesser extent at The Coffees.
North Reef was also good for snapper but had the added bonus of a wider range of species such as pearl perch, moses perch, venus tusk fish, estuary cod, cobia and yellowtail kingfish. Josh Collins (above) tempted this 10kg kingie with a live yakka on a small bommie at the top of North on Saturday afternoon.
Black Spot Tusk Fish
Closer to home, mulloway (jewfish) were active at Victor Bailey's and Castaways reefs while Sunshine Reef was the spot for squire, sweetlip, estuary cod and the odd tusk fish. James Clarke (above) won the Davo's Fish of the Week prize with the 5.8kg black spot tusk fish he boated there on Sunday night.
The JUly Bar Crossing Safety Award
When you next cross over the Noosa Bar, make sure you (and your crew) wear your pfd's. It's not only mandatory for all vessels under 4.8 metres, there's a chance you could win the $100.00 monthly prize if you're photographed doing the right thing! The July Bar Crossing Safety Award goes to the skipper of the boat, registration number; GW882Q, pictured above. The monthly prize consists of a $50.00 gift voucher from Davo's Compleat Angler, a $50.00 gift voucher from Ray Scholes Marine and the framed award plaque, courtesy of Fishing Noosa, featuring your boat in action.
If you're the skipper/owner of the boat pictured, call 5449 8099 or pop into Davo's to claim your prize. Note: You have until the end of August 2013 to do so.
