| OFFSHORE: Those boaties
who managed to get out earlier in the week got the best of it with light
to moderate (5 to 15 knot) variable easterlies and a 1m to 1.2m swell setting
the scene for some quite pleasant sessions on the local reefs. The weekend
warriors didn't fare so well, unfortunately, with 15 to 20 knot east south
easterlies and a 2m swell making it a tad lumpy out there, even on Jew Shoal.
The fishing was a bit patchy at times but on the good days there were some
quality fish taken. Captain Doug and his good buddy Joe Pizarro (below)
were doing a spot of bottom bashing at North Reef on Friday when a hooked
reefy that Captain was reeling in was taken by what they thought was a shark.
In a team effort the two amigos played their powerful adversary to a standstill
and were elated when it turned out to be a 31.5kg Spaniard. For their efforts,
and great smiles, they also won the Davo's
Fish of the Week prize.
North Reef also produced pearl perch, moses perch, sweetlip, teraglin jewfish, shark, Maori cod, snapper and, as per the photo below, the odd cobia. Col Burnett from Brisbane was out there on Friday on a full day Trekka 2 charter when he hooked and landed the 8kg cobia or black kingfish he's pictured with.
There were plenty of average size reefies on the bite this week but no absolute standouts. Glen Fitzsimmons from Mooloolaba (below) is pictured with one of the better size snapper boated on Saturday's three quarter day Cougar One charter. Also out along the middle reef belt, 'The Hill' produced good Spanish mackerel in numbers, as did Chardon's Reef but with the added bonus there of spotted mackerel and snapper. Snapper were also taken at Sunshine Reef.
The only other reports to come in were of a few squire and sweetlip at Little Hall's Reef and the odd snodger 5kg+ snapper on the bite out around Jew Shoal.
