This week was the complete opposite to last week with only one day off the
water. Sunday's strong 20 to 30 knot north easterly blow and heavy rain
shut the gate briefly but apart from that it was light to moderate (5 to
15 knot) variable winds, a 0.5m to 1.0m swell and little or no current.
The bar crossing behaved itself most of the time although a few boaties did get caught out around low tide and found themselves churning sand or, worse case scenario, high and dry for a while. None of the incidents were serious enough to involve the Coast Guard and nobody was caught on camera, much to their relief I'm sure. Quite a few boats fished Double Island Point earlier in the week but it was either feast or famine with results reflecting local knowledge and time spent. Species on the bite up that way were; snapper, cobia, pearl perch, moses perch, venus tusk fish, coral bream, Maori cod, northern bluefin tuna and gold spot wrasse. Tony Dicker from Brassall, Queensland (above) is pictured with a cobia from Friday's nine hour, full day Trekka 2 charter to 'D.I'.
|And from that same charter we have James Paine
from Cooroy (above left) with two good knobby snapper. Closer in, North
reef produced snapper, squire, teraglin jewfish, grass sweetlip, many lined
sweetlip, slate bream, pearl perch, hussar, moses perch, mack tuna, longtail
tuna, red throat emperor and coral trout. Wild
Thing 2 skipper Paul Glover (below) nailed this standout trout
there on Friday. The grass sweetlip above right was also from that seven
And that's not all. Paul Sorrenson from Sydney (below) nailed a quality snapper on that charter. They boated a couple more trout as well but who's counting.
Also from North Reef (below left) we have Choo Siang Lee from Singapore with two snapper which he caught on Tuesday's five hour Cougar One charter.
|And above right, Paul Robson from Cleveland tempted this quality gold spot cod with a pilchard bait down deep on Thursday's seven hour Trekka 2 charter.|
|Report and photos from Jordy Zerk... "Hey Bill,
here's a few pics from Wednesday arvo. Luke Elson and I went for a kayak
off Coolum just before dark and got stuck into a stack of tuna, a few nice
snapper and parrot. The weather was perfect! Cheers!" Jordy's northern bluefin
tuna (above left) went for a Z-Man paddle tail soft plastic while Luke Elson,
above right, is pictured with one of the snapper they boated. You can see
the soft plastic still in its mouth.
Closer to home, Sunshine Ref was good for grass sweetlip, snapper, moses perch, slate bream, venus tusk fish, northern bluefin tuna and yellowfin tuna. In Laguna Bay, the longtails were there in numbers but they were a bit slow to take a bait or lure. Kai McKay (above) picked up this 10kg specimen on a well cast metal slug lure on Tuesday afternoon. Apart from that, snapper, northern bluefin tuna and jewfish were on the bite at Stingers, north of Big Halls Reef.
