The Noosa Fishing Report

As at Friday March 16, 2018.
Brought to you by... Davo's Tackle World Noosa
OFFSHORE: Well. Not much to report this week. A total washout pretty much sums it up with 20 to 25 knot south easterlies peaking around the 30 to 40 knot mark late Wednesday, early Thursday. The bar wasn't too bad earlier in the week but the blustery conditions and 3m+ outside swell put paid to any thoughts of venturing past the shark nets. That would have been worth a shot though because there would have been a few longtails on the prowl there.
Since the offshore scene was a no-go (and consequently no photos) we thought we'd do a Video/Photo roundup. January into February 2018. As above.

COASTAL: No joy on the surf anglers with dangerous conditions on the open beaches and the more sheltered headland points chocka block with surfers.

ESTUARY: River report and photos from Jimmy Free, Noosa River Fishing Safaris... "Only worked the lower estuary the last week after the consistent rain we've had. The river mouth has been producing well on the outgoing tides. Flathead can be found in most spots and large whiting in most of the shallow lagoon areas that are forming here and there. Plenty of cod around up and down the rocky footpath between the bar and the dog beach you've just got to be quick with them before they run under a snag. Jewfish are schooling up in both the Woods Bays lately and the odd tailor shooting around. Couple of the local boys have been sharked the last couple days so there’s a few around. Overall the fishing has been good. Just a bit limited with our spots on Wednesday due to the 20+ knot southerly breathing down on us. Still lots of bait around though. The trevs have been thick in The Sound hammering through all the life. Took out the Noosa Fish Headz boys for a Comp on Sunday morning and got quite a few trevally. Pictured (below right) is local angler Jake with his competition winning giant trevally landed on a ChaiseBaits Curly Bait in Pearl Prawn which they let go. And Aarav (below left) with his 68cm Dusky, caught on a prawn. Cheers, Jimmy." The river mouth also had good sized bream going for mullet strips, whitebait and whole prawn.
Flathead Giant Trevally
And pictured (below left) is Chunk and his son Jack from Sydney with a 69cm flathead. Caught in the lower estuary on a prawn bait on Monday's Noosa River Fishing Safari... "We got a photo and let her go. Young Jack pretty much got this lizard in all on his own with a little bit of help towards the end."
Flathead Jewfish
The Frying Pan and the Munna Flats areas were good for quality whiting while the Woods Bays yielded trevally and, as mentioned, jewfish. From Rhys 'Flattychamp' Pierce... "Rhys (above right), Scott and Ryan popped out for a late afternoon session in the Woods Bays on Sunday, enduring the rain and storms. Managed about half a dozen small trevally, with the standout catch being a nice jewie. Fish went for drifted soft plastics. All released."
Mangrove Jack
The mangrove jacks were out and about with The Sound, Weyba Creek and the stretch between the lakes producing fish between the 40cm to 50cm mark. From Conor Burrows, above... "Last week I took the little kayak off Coolum and cracked some mac tuna and decided to keep one for bait. Finally got the time to use it on Monday night. Decided to fish for some jacks and nailed this beauty at 49cm, nearly cracking my goal of 50cm. Safely released after some quick photos. Cheers!!" Conor's quality catch and release earned him this week's $100.00 Davo's/ChaseBaits
Fish of the Week prize.
On the freshwater scene, deep diving lures including Lively Lures Micro Mullet and Eco Gear CX 35HS were working well along the drop offs at Lake Macdonald and Borumba Dam. From Anthony Ryan... "Hi Bill. Callum (above) caught and released this saratoga at Lake Macdonald last Sunday on a hard plastic rattler. It was an old Valvoline Lure oil promotion. He was over the moon. Cheers, Anthony"
Surface was also working well during low light periods with many fish taking a well presented Lucky Craft Sammy 65 or similar Jackson Risk Bait surface walker off the top and close in to the banks.
